Pain management and MAT

Drug Tests for Pain Management and MAT Clinics

Pain management and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) clinics test to check that patients take what they're prescribed and nothing they're not. That means cups that read the prescribed medications as well as illicit drugs.

Test for the prescribed medication

A cup with oxycodone, buprenorphine or methadone strips shows whether the prescribed drug is present. EDDP, the methadone metabolite, helps show methadone was taken rather than added to the sample.

Look for what shouldn't be there

Fentanyl, benzodiazepines and other opioids are the common unexpected findings. Standard opiate strips don't detect fentanyl or oxycodone, so check the cup includes both.

Use a CLIA waived test

Clinical testing needs CLIA waived tests and a CLIA Certificate of Waiver from CMS, used as the manufacturer instructs.

Confirm before you change treatment

A screen is preliminary. Confirm unexpected results at a laboratory using GC-MS or LC-MS/MS before any change to a prescription.

Picked for the drugs this kind of program usually needs; the label is CLIA waived. Drugs and cutoffs are taken from each product's label. Always follow the package insert.

Single-drug tests to add

Run a strip on the same sample when your cup doesn't cover a drug.

All single-drug tests

How to read the result

Negative
Two colored lines appear: one in the control region (C) and one in the test region (T) for that drug. A line in T of any intensity, even a faint one, means negative for that drug.
Preliminary positive
Only one colored line appears, in the control region (C). No line appears in the test region (T) for that drug. This means the drug may be present at or above the cutoff level.
Invalid
No line appears in the control region (C). Discard the test and repeat with a new device. If it happens again, contact us.

Always follow the package insert for the specific test. Preliminary positive results should be confirmed by a laboratory using GC-MS or LC-MS/MS.

Every product has a volume price ladder. Accounts that reorder get their own price list, and we quote large or recurring orders.

Questions from pain clinics

Why do pain clinics drug test?

To check that patients take their prescribed medication and are not using other drugs that make treatment unsafe, as part of the clinic's opioid prescribing policy.

Do positive results need to be confirmed?

Yes. A positive result on an instant test is preliminary. Before any legal, employment or clinical action, have the specimen confirmed by a certified laboratory using GC-MS or LC-MS/MS. 12 Panel Now isn't affiliated with a specific laboratory, so customers arrange confirmation testing independently.

How much do the tests cost?

Our CLIA waived cups start at $0.79 a cup at 20,000+, and single-drug strips cost less. Every product has a volume price ladder, and accounts that reorder get their own price list.
