Keep it simple and consistent
Use the same cup for every resident so results are easy to compare. A one-step cup collects and tests in the same container, with nothing to pipette or dip.
Don't forget alcohol
Most drug panels don't test for alcohol. An EtG strip on the same sample shows recent drinking that a breath test would miss.
Cover fentanyl
Standard opiate strips don't detect fentanyl. Choose a cup with a fentanyl strip, or add a fentanyl strip to the sample.
Write down the policy
Decide in writing when residents are tested, who collects, and what happens after a non-negative result, including sending the sample to a laboratory for confirmation.

How to read the result
- Negative
- Two colored lines appear: one in the control region (C) and one in the test region (T) for that drug. A line in T of any intensity, even a faint one, means negative for that drug.
- Preliminary positive
- Only one colored line appears, in the control region (C). No line appears in the test region (T) for that drug. This means the drug may be present at or above the cutoff level.
- Invalid
- No line appears in the control region (C). Discard the test and repeat with a new device. If it happens again, contact us.
Always follow the package insert for the specific test. Preliminary positive results should be confirmed by a laboratory using GC-MS or LC-MS/MS.
