Workplace Drug Testing (Non-DOT)
Employers test under their own drug-free workplace policy: before hiring, at random, after an accident, or on reasonable suspicion. Instant tests give a result on site in minutes, so a negative candidate can start the same day.

Write the policy first
Say who is tested, when, for which drugs, and what happens after a non-negative result. Some states regulate or restrict on-site testing, so check your state's rules before you start.
Pick the panel for your workforce
Five to twelve panels is a common range for workplace testing. Some employers add fentanyl, and some leave out THC where marijuana is legal; we sell cups without a THC strip.
Urine or oral fluid
Urine cups are the most common. Oral fluid swabs are quick to collect under observation and show more recent use.
Confirm before you act
Confirm a non-negative screen at a laboratory before any employment decision. Federally regulated (DOT) positions can't use instant tests at all.

How to read the result
- Negative
- Two colored lines appear: one in the control region (C) and one in the test region (T) for that drug. A line in T of any intensity, even a faint one, means negative for that drug.
- Preliminary positive
- Only one colored line appears, in the control region (C). No line appears in the test region (T) for that drug. This means the drug may be present at or above the cutoff level.
- Invalid
- No line appears in the control region (C). Discard the test and repeat with a new device. If it happens again, contact us.
Always follow the package insert for the specific test. Preliminary positive results should be confirmed by a laboratory using GC-MS or LC-MS/MS.

Questions from workplace testing
What is the most common drug test for employment?
A multi-panel urine screen, collected on site or at a collection center. The panel is set by the employer's policy, or by federal rules for DOT-regulated jobs.
Can employers use instant drug tests?
For non-DOT, company-policy testing, yes, subject to state rules; some states regulate or restrict on-site testing. DOT-regulated testing must go to an HHS-certified laboratory.
Do positive results need to be confirmed?
Yes. A positive result on an instant test is preliminary. Before any legal, employment or clinical action, have the specimen confirmed by a certified laboratory using GC-MS or LC-MS/MS. 12 Panel Now isn't affiliated with a specific laboratory, so customers arrange confirmation testing independently.
Can these tests be used for DOT testing?
No. Instant (point-of-collection) tests can't be used for DOT-required testing. Under 49 CFR Part 40, DOT tests must be collected on a federal custody and control form and analyzed at an HHS-certified laboratory. Instant cups, dip cards and oral swabs are for non-DOT programs, such as company-policy pre-employment, random, reasonable-suspicion and post-accident testing.
How much do the tests cost?
Our CLIA waived cups start at $0.79 a cup at 20,000+, and single-drug strips cost less. Every product has a volume price ladder, and accounts that reorder get their own price list.
